For the past four years I have been collaborating with the composer Sarah Kirkland Snider, writing poems for her vocal-based commissions. Together we have written pieces for Roomful of Teeth, The Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and Cantus; future projects include music for BAM, Trinity Wall Street, and other ensembles. Our song, "The Orchard," was included on Roomful of Teeth's 2014 eponymous release, which won the Grammy for "Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance."

The first group of poems I wrote for Sarah (and Roomful of Teeth) has now become her second full-length record, Unremembered, a thirteen-part song cycle for seven voices and chamber orchestra, inspired by my poems and illustrations. The record features vocalists Shara Worden, Padma Newsome, DM Stith, and the Unremembered Orchestra, conducted by Edwin Outwater and will be released on New Amsterdam Records on July 31st 2015.

A meditation on memory, innocence, and the haunted grandeur of the natural world, Unremembered recalls strange and beautiful happenings experienced during a childhood in rural Massachusetts. The cycle explores the ways in which beguiling events in early life can resonate in—and prepare us for—the subtler horrors that lie beyond the realm of childhood.

Below you'll find a few of the poems and their accompanying illustrations. Both the CD and 2xLPs include all 13 poems and illustrations. For more about the record, to watch the trailer video, find out about events and performances, and information about purchase, please click the image below:
